When I was studying Chemical Engineering at Poli - USP, we said that phosphoric acid was the second compound (in terms of production volume) of the inorganic chemical industry (losing the first place to sulfuric acid). But it was the first in terms of production value (again in the inorganic side of the chemical business).
I think that it is still valid.
Some 40 million tons of P2O5 are produced each year.
China, USA, Morocco, Russia, Índia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Tunisia, Jordan and Israel are the top ten followed by Lituania, Mexico, Senegal, South Africa, Australia and Indonesia.
And if there is something in transforming a sandy rock into a liquid with sulfuric acid (removing a lot of gypsum in the middle), well, it is more or less impredictable, in the sense that a mineral body is never really constant.
